History

Started in 1992, the grandeur of the event has only multiplied by manifold over the decades. This year, it will be the 27th year of its celebration and is going to be special. Attracting thousands of people and travellers from around the world, the event is a congruence of art, culture, and food from diverse parts of the country. Artisans and artists from throughout the country come with their skills and talents and set up stalls during the festival, showing the world their masterpieces and giving a chance to the general public to own them as well.

Significance

You wouldn’t believe if we told you that over 400 artisans set up stalls every year in this festival every year. Some of the works you will come across include stone and wooden carvings from the state of Tamil Nadu, paper mash work from Kashmir and south India, bamboo and cane masterpieces from the North East, saris from Banaras, carpets and shawls from Kashmir, pottery works from Khurja, brassware from Moradabad and more. These stalls allow you to catch a glimpse of cultures and traditions hiding behind innumerable streets of India and buy a piece for your home, too.

Culture

Apart from the stalls and exhibits, what attracts the major portion of the audience is the live performances by some renowned musicians and artists. Be it folk music, semi-classical or classical dance forms, it is one place the entire nation comes together to witness something phenomenal. Imagine sitting by the banks of Yamuna during a chilly evening with the illuminated Taj Mahal at the backdrop and catching some of your most favourite dance forms or performers live! Isn’t that something we all crave for somewhere deep inside our hearts?

Food

If diverse cultures and traditions are coming together at one common point, food cannot be overlooked! One of the other fascinating aspects of the Taj Mahotsav is the food stalls and cuisines from around India. Whether it is the kebab from Lucknow, chole bhature from Punjab or masala dosa from Tamil Nadu, you can find something to satisfy your taste bud here during the festival. What more can be a uniting factor than food?

When is the Taj Mahotsav?

This year, the Taj Mahotsav is happening from the 18th of February to the 27th of February. You need to buy an entry ticket of approximately  Rs. 50 to enter the festival and there are no distinct tickets for the events and performances. Children below 5 years enter free and so do foreign tourists.
